The ULTRAs 2017 silent auction: bid for the holiday of a lifetime to help Children in Crisis

The ULTRAs 2017 silent auction: bid for the holiday of a lifetime to help Children in Crisis

At the 2017 ULTRAs dinner at The Savoy, London, in May, the Duchess of York gave a moving and inspiring speech in which she recounted an expedition that would forever change her life. After seeing first-hand the terrible conditions children were facing in Albania and
the former Yugoslavia, she set up the charity Children in Crisis in 1993 to provide support for displaced children who have fallen through the cracks.

Today, Children in Crisis works in Afghanistan, Burundi, DR Congo, Liberia and Sierra Leone – some of the world’s poorest countries. Without a reliable social-care system in place, these nations’ isolated and neglected children are especially vulnerable; Children in Crisis works closely with their parents and caregivers to ensure they have a more hopeful future. Education is key, and one of the charity’s primary objectives is to provide access to schooling. That might mean building schools or training teachers, but often so much more is necessary – there’s little point in providing a good school and teachers if children have to work all day because their family are struggling to survive. This is why Children in Crisis also runs projects such as vocational training and village banking for women. Empowering parents to earn or save more means they can improve their children’s diet and health, and remove the need for them to work – which means they can go to school.

The ULTRAs 2017 ceremony held at London’s Savoy hotel
To see real results, sustained effort is needed, and Children in Crisis has a proven track record in providing long-term help to those who need it most. This year, for example, marks the 20th anniversary of the charity’s efforts in Afghanistan. Since its foundation, it has reached 1,041,236 children, built 63 schools, trained 20,357 teachers, provided 9,122 parents with vocational or literacy assistance, and trained 400 social workers.

There is, however, much more still to be done. With more children than ever in need of the charity’s help, its team wants to double the number of young people it reaches each year. And through their generous support, readers of Telegraph Luxury and The Telegraph’s luxury-travel magazine Ultratravel who bid for an exceptional holiday
will provide vital, meaningful assistance to some of the world’s most at-risk children.

The 30 prizes listed below have all been donated, very kindly, by hotels, airlines and travel partners who were impressed by the work that the charity does and wanted to do their bit to help. All you have to do is to bid generously for the prizes, in the knowledge that while you are enjoying the holiday of a lifetime, children’s lives will be considerably improved, too.
